I didn't really knew the card, but I do know the many routines and shaders it saw first intimately and we could enjoy some time later.

I've added another ATI radeon graphics sticker to my case just to commemorate.

That's the "streaming stores" in my post. Or to be correct, it's a MOVNTPS instruction using the _mm_stream_ps() intrinsic, which is the SSE equivalent of MOVNTQ instruction in MMX.

Have you try the MOVNTQ instruction ?
If i remember, you can have real gain in SSE, on some test few year ago i gained a factor of 2 on some VDub rescale filters.

Heh, I don't think it was Linux that killed it. It died during some DX11 experiments I did.

Oddly enough, the release notes for the Linux drivers still say that the HD 3870x2 is not supported, although clearly it worked for me now, so I suppose this is just a documentation error.

Still sure about that one?

"if they had a better price/performance or better feature set"

Doesn't that depend on what your doing with it, i generally find nvidia boards gets newer features first, also the drivers tend to expose it way earlier, especially for openGL.
though personally i would wait until next fall to update as their 300 series is on the way and it's supposed to be pretty good.
