I don't call 15% performance improvement lame or useless. That's what I'm getting in my test app I'm running right now. It will probably go up when I increase resolution. The normal way of doing bumpmapping is by using a RGBA8 texture. That gives 4:1 compression. If we start revising things like you do then we could conclude that DXT1 isn't the typically quoted 8:1 either, only 6:1, or actually just 4:1 if we take into account that the stored pixels are only 16bit precision. You can count whatever way you want depending on what your source material is. If you use a RGBA32f source you could claim a 32;1 compression for DXT1. Comparing typical usage scenarios, it's a 4:1 compression.

Thats a great demo, one effect that I would like to see is the image distortion effect (sorry don't know its real name). An example of this is the later levels in FarCry, I thought that the gases where escaping pipes etc where amazing, if you could do that on some kind of hot planet (not earth like) that would be great. Sorry I am not too technical but I have been looking for a demo showing that off, but can't seem to find one anywhjere, my apologies if I have overlooked it on your great site.

davepermen,
the thing was on display in the store, so I could judge it and it looked fine. But it was running a movie, so I couldn't be too sure how good it would look in games, which is a whole different thing than running a game.
bardsong,
naaaah, my beloved 9800pro aint gonna leave me.

Nice rig. But i just bought 20.1" HP2035 LCD with 16 ms also. That's 0.1 inch bigger than your old CRT

And so much better for games & video than my old 18" 25ms Samsung181T.
Anyway, i'll buy x800pro asap. But not as near important for myself as such a great monitor.

Well, it's true MS managed to do the same with Direct3D as with Windows, but does that mean Direct3D is the best API? Also considder this: John Carmack, the best 3d-programmer in the world according to a lot of people, is using OpenGL instead of Direct3D.

I knew what I was buying, I don't really play many games these days. I just wanted a big sharp display.
