Why do you get soft shadows for free? Normal ray tracing has hard shadows.

being raytraced have nothing to do with soft shadows. It's raytraced because it takes a list of objects and computes visibility by checking whether the line from the fragment to the light intersects a sphere.

This is only really meant for simple objects such as spheres. It doesn't apply to complex models. I'm thinking of writing a raytracing demo for more complex shapes, but it will likely be slower than shadow mapping and stencil shadows and still only be hard shadows.
