There's nothing wrong with quality of the source image; however, it's zoomed in so that you can compare the compression artifacts better. When you're zoomed out even DXT1 will look fine.

I don't think this comparison is 100% fair since the original image is such poor quality that some compression artifacts may not be visisble.
